A Guide to Fixing Scratches on Solid Wood Tables

Although solid wood tables are very practical, scratches and stains will inevitably occur during daily use, which not only affects the aesthetics but may also reduce the service life. In order to keep your solid wood table in good condition, it only takes a few steps to restore it to like-new condition. Here are the specific steps to follow:

Tools and materials:

  • Sandpaper (320 grit, 400 grit, 600 grit, 1000 grit)
  • Lint-free, dry cotton cloth
  • Wood wax oil
  1. Cleaning and preparation:

Wipe the entire tabletop with a wrung-out damp cloth to remove dust and debris. If necessary, use a mild detergent solution to clean stubborn stains. Allow the table to dry completely before continuing.

  1. Sanding

Note: Sand in the direction of the wood grain and wipe the surface clean with a cloth after sanding.

  • Light scratches:

Lightly sand the affected area with 600-grit sandpaper, following the grain of the wood, until the surface is smooth, then wipe off the sanding dust with a clean cloth.

  • Severe Stain or Scratch Treatment:

First, remove most stains and surface marks by sanding with 320-grit sandpaper. Then continue sanding with 400-grit sandpaper, which eliminates the traces left by the 320-grit sandpaper sanding and makes the surface more delicate. Finally, use 600-grit sandpaper for fine sanding to ensure that the surface is ideally smooth.

  1. Apply wood wax oil.

After sanding, the tabletop may look a bit patterned and marked; this is when the wood wax oil shows its magic. Wood wax oil not only enhances the look of the table but also protects it from moisture and wear.

Use a clean cotton cloth dipped in an appropriate amount of wood wax oil and apply it evenly in the direction of the wood grain, starting with the edges and sides and moving to the center section, paying special attention to the end areas. For dark-colored wood, you can repeat the application of wood wax oil to achieve a deeper shine.

  1. Drying

Wait for 1-2 minutes for it to penetrate the wood. When the top layer of wood wax oil is slightly dry, use a clean cotton cloth to wipe off the excess. Then wait until it has fully cured. At room temperature, it takes 3 hours for the surface to dry completely and 72 hours for it to fully cure.

  1. Finishing

Once the table is completely dry, give it a final sanding with 1000-grit sandpaper and reapply a thin layer of wood wax oil for shine and protection.

By following these steps, you can easily repair damage to your solid wood table, prolonging its life and maintaining its beauty. The recommended maintenance of wood wax oil once or twice a year will ensure that your solid wood table stays in good condition for a long time.
